to Building AI Systems

I'm Robert Szopa — fitness industry native, systems architect, and multi-founder. I've lifted treadmills onto dollies, climbed through equipment-packed shipping containers, and built the AI infrastructure that now runs fitness businesses at scale. That combination of floor-level fluency and technical depth is what makes GymSpotter different from every other platform in this space.

Built Different, From the Ground Up

Queens, New York

I didn't start in boardrooms or tech incubators. I started in Queens, navigating an environment that demands systematic thinking at every turn. Those years taught me something no MBA program teaches: every signal matters, every function must serve a purpose, and systems either work or they don't.

The Summer Job That Rewired My Thinking

What started as a high school summer job at Pro Gym Supply became a decade-long education in how fitness businesses actually operate. Working from a small garage, I restored commercial-grade equipment hands-on — treadmills, ellipticals, spin bikes, full strength lines. While my peers were at parties, I was putting in 60-hour weeks perfecting inventory systems and studying Toyota Production methods.

Philosophy Meets Operations

My background in philosophy and cognitive science isn't decorative — it's functional. Understanding how people think and make decisions lets me build systems that actually get adopted. I've seen too many technically sound systems fail because they ignored human behavior. Mine don't, because they're designed with both in mind.

The Journey

15 Years of Hands-On Experience

From the shop floor to AI architecture — every role built the systems deployed today

  1. 2010 – 2013

    Apprentice Technician

    Pro Gym Supply

Specialized in full restoration and servicing of commercial-grade gym equipment, particularly indoor cycling bikes. Learned equipment mechanics hands-on and developed the quality standards that still underpin every certification protocol GymSpotter applies today.

Equipment Repair Quality Control Commercial Restoration
  2. 2013 – 2014

    Marketing Assistant

    Pro Gym Supply

Managed product listings across Craigslist, eBay, Sears, and Alibaba. Took ownership of the company website and developed early SEO capabilities while researching new distribution channels. First direct exposure to the gap between how fitness businesses describe inventory and how buyers actually search for it.

  3. 2015 – 2017

    Production Coordinator

    Pro Gym Supply

Redesigned inventory and production from the ground up. Built a work order system tracking equipment through every reconditioning stage — disassembly, sanding, painting, reassembly, and testing. This Kanban-inspired approach was the direct ancestor of the workflow automation systems deployed for clients today.

  4. 2017 – 2019

    Marketing Director

    Pro Gym Supply

Developed strategic email campaigns, managed eBay's largest commercial fitness equipment listings, and built the coordination layer between inventory, production, and sales. Reduced fulfillment friction through systematized communication that didn't require constant management intervention.

Strategic Marketing E-commerce Management Cross-Team Coordination
  5. 2020 – 2022

    Digital Consultant

    Gym Tech

Redesigned their e-commerce architecture and deployed a catalog of 1,000+ fitness equipment products. Managed the full digital stack — hosting, Google Ads, Facebook Ads, conversion optimization, and UX. Refined what had been built intuitively over a decade into a repeatable, data-driven framework.

How I Think

The Infrastructure Mindset

When I look at a business, I see signals and functions. Every touchpoint is part of a larger system that can be optimized or broken.

Mapping the Signals

First, I map every signal flowing through your business. Where do leads originate? How do they move through your pipeline? Where do they stall? I track actual data — not assumed flows — before touching anything.

Identifying Bottlenecks

Every system has weak points. I find them by analyzing where manual work concentrates, where errors cluster, and where customers disengage. These are the high-leverage targets — fix them and everything else accelerates.

Building the Foundation

Infrastructure comes before intelligence. Clean data structures, clear process flows, documented logic. Without this, automation doesn't solve problems — it just accelerates existing chaos.

Implementing Intelligence

Then comes the AI — not because it's trending, but because the foundation is ready to support it. Pattern recognition, predictive scoring, automated decision-making: each function deployed to solve a specific, measured problem.

Continuous Optimization

Systems aren't static — they degrade or improve based on how they're maintained. I build feedback loops that surface new bottlenecks and adapt behavior automatically. The best systems compound over time.

Measuring What Matters

Everything ties to business outcomes — cost reduced, revenue grown, hours reclaimed, churn reversed. If a system doesn't move these metrics, it's not doing its job. I track ruthlessly and cut what doesn't perform.

The Person Behind the Systems

From the Mats to AI Architecture

Jiu Jitsu: The Great Equalizer

I trained Jiu Jitsu full-time for several years and it completely recalibrated how I see competitive environments. On the mats, your title, income, and status are irrelevant. Only your ability and your training partner's trust matter. That environment connected me with people I would never have met in any other context.

Networks Built on Substance

Showing up consistently, being a reliable training partner, and helping others improve earned me relationships with practitioners from every profession. A kid from Queens who started with nothing found himself building professional connections based entirely on demonstrated character — not credentials. That experience directly shaped how I approach business development and partnerships.

The Philosophy in Practice

Jiu Jitsu reinforced the belief in creating systems where businesses compete on the value they deliver — not the size of their marketing budget. Good infrastructure levels the playing field. That's what GymSpotter builds.

Real Automation Testing: Fatherhood

Running multiple businesses while being present as a father to Levi is where automation stops being theoretical. When you have a toddler and a deadline in the same room, every inefficiency costs you time you can't get back. The systems built for clients are stress-tested in that exact pressure. They have to work because I need them to work.

What Drives the Work

Operating Principles

Outcomes Over Outputs

Not interested in building complex systems for complexity's sake. The only metric that matters is measurable impact on your business — cost reduced, revenue grown, time reclaimed.

Systems Thinking

Every business is an interconnected system. Problems are solved by understanding the whole architecture — which prevents the common failure mode of fixing one area while breaking three others.

Direct Communication

I'll tell you what will work and what won't — before you spend money finding out. If something isn't the right fit, I'll say so. Long-term trust is worth more than any single engagement.

Continuous Learning

The AI and automation landscape shifts constantly. What was best practice last quarter may be obsolete today. I stay current because my clients' competitive advantage depends on it.

Built to Last

Quick fixes aren't in the vocabulary. I build infrastructure that scales with your growth, adapts to changing conditions, and still functions effectively years from now.

Psychology Is Architecture

The best technical system fails if people don't use it. Adoption rates determine real-world success more than any spec sheet. I design with human behavior as a first-order constraint.

The Ecosystem

Three Ventures. One Architecture.

Robert Szopa on AI transformation

Reading about time and cost savings is one thing. Actually operating a business after genuine automation — feeling the hours return, watching decisions happen without you — that unlocks a different kind of freedom. AI is a structural shift unlike anything this industry has seen, and it will touch every part of how fitness businesses operate. The question isn't whether to engage with it. It's whether you build it right.
